Why did you become a spiritual director?
I grew up in the Church of Scotland and discerned a call to ordained ministry in my late twenties. From my early thirties, I began meeting regularly with a spiritual director and found the experience invaluable, both in terms of my faith and for life in general. Before I was forty, I could no longer ignore the draw towards offering spiritual direction myself, especially as I realised that enabling people to find God in their lives was one of the most rewarding aspects of ministry. I began training with the London Centre for Spiritual Direction via their 3-year Encounter course, finishing at the start of July 2025. Each week of that course was a delight and a joy, and I have grown so much throughout the course. I find meeting with another person to discern the presence and call of God on their live to be a joyful and enlivening experience.
How often do we meet?
The hour-long sessions usually take place every 4-6 weeks.
Why do you not meet people in person?
Because of my dogs and the size of the house in which I live, I have made the decision to predominately meet people online (or by phone, if they prefer). I love meeting people in person, but I cannot offer that on a consistent basis at the moment. That said, if someone wants to meet in-person in the Edinburgh area and they can provide the physical space, then I will certainly consider that!
Why do you use Google Meet?
I realise most people are familiar with Zoom, and some will have Teams, but the costs involved in these platforms do not make financial sense for me. Google Meet feels very similar to Zoom and you will not need a Google account to join a meeting with me.
Why do you not meet with people during the day?
I have a full-time job and am also a non-stipendiary priest in the Diocese of Edinburgh. This limits the times when I can offer accompaniment to evenings and some weekends.
Are our sessions confidential?
Yes, with a caveat. If I feel that you pose a danger to yourself or others, I will contact the appropriate authorities. I also undertake regular supervision; however, this is more about me than you. In supervision, what is discussed is my response in/to our sessions rather than anything specific you share with me. This enables me to continue to grow in this ministry and provides professional accountability. As with any good supervision, anonymity is respected by all involved.
Do you charge?
Yes, I do. I have a sliding scale of fees from £10 to £40 per session. You choose what you can afford within that range: no questions asked. In this way, I seek to strike a balance between covering costs, honouring the value of my time, skill, and training, and recognising that many are facing a squeeze on their finances just now.
Are you regulated?
Unlike counselling, Spiritual Direction is not regulated. Instead, I am a member of the London Centre for Spiritual Direction and adhere to their Code of Conduct. I receive regular supervision. I hold membership of the Scottish PVG Scheme, for both children and protected adults, through the Scottish Episcopal Church. I am insured by the Howden Group.
